In such cases, keeping the old one will only cause more trouble. Carpet cleaning might not suffice for quality indoor air and your health comes first. Although there are many methods to treat stains, remove bad odors and take care of mildew, still stain and mold remediation & decontamination might not due the trick if there is a wet padding underneath.
Sometimes, it's good to renovate your floors with new carpets. Their removal requires attention in order to avoid damaging the floor underneath or the tack strips if they are in good condition. On the other hand, you must look at the condition of the floor underneath in order to determine if they are suitable for new carpet installation or need repairs, too.
Basic steps for carpet removal
Before removing carpets, the floor must be clean from furniture. It's best to vacuum carpets before removing them and also protect yourself by wearing gloves and a face mask. The latter is necessary if there is mold or water damage. The carpet must be lifted on one corner with the help of pliers. It will be easier if you cut it along the length side of the room so that it can be rolled faster. You must be extra careful not to cut the floor underneath or damage the track strips. So, it would be easier if you keep it lifted as you cut it in pieces.
If there is padding, you should also cut it in smaller pieces and remove it. They are usually stapled on the floor and the staples can be later removed with pliers. If you are planning to remove the trap strips as well, be careful of the nails which might pop and hurt you. If there are transitions in good condition, cut the carpet before to avoid ruining them. Now you will have the chance to take care of the floor underneath. It takes quite an effort to remove carpets so think about it. If the replacement is done due to mold or similar problems, remember that by taking care of the carpets and proceeding with prompt stain removal the new ones will last longer.
